China Unicom Reservations for New iPhones Surpass 100,000 Units

China Unicom reservations for the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c have passed 100,000 units, reports Bloomberg.

China Unicom, which announced the volume of registrations on its official account with Sina Corp.’s Weibo microblog, hasn’t disclosed pricing plans for the handsets which are due to go on sale Sept. 20.

Notably, Apple has still not announced a deal with China Mobile, the country's biggest carrier. However, sources say Apple is close to shipping devices to the carrier. It was recently granted the final license necessary to launch the iPhone on China Mobile's network standard

Sprint to Launch 'One Up' Early Upgrade Program

Sprint is reportedly preparing to launch 'One Up', an early upgrade program that would let its customers pay for the devices in monthly installments and upgrade each year by trading in their existing device, reports CNET.

Sprint will be the last major U.S. carrier to offer an early upgrade program. T-Mobile has Jump, AT&T has NEXT, and Verizon has Edge.

Sprint's One Up lets customers pick up a phone with no money down and pay for the device in 24 monthly installments. A phone that costs $649.99, for instance, will cost $27 a month (with the difference tacked on to the 24th payment). If a customer leaves the service early, that person is on the hook for the balance of the device cost, due the following month. After a year, a customer can upgrade to a new phone by trading in the device.

One Up will be available to customers on Unlimited, My Way or All-In plans. It will reportedly provide a $15 discount which brings Sprint's unlimited talk, text, and data plan down to $65/month.

One Up is set to launch on September 20.

Apple Moves Lined Up Toyko Customers Indoors to Escape Typhoon [Video]

Apple moved Tokyo customers that were lined up for the iPhone 5s to shelter inside the store, just before a typhoon hit the city, reports Kotaku. Heavy winds and torrential rains resulted in flash flood warnings for parts of the country and some areas were ordered to evacuate.

You can see a clip of those in line being moved into the empty Ginza Store, which hadn't opened, at a little after 7:30am. There, they were allowed to bring in their wet possessions, rest in the Apple Store theater until 10am, and were even given bottled water.

"I was so moved how Apple treats its customers," said YouTube user AppTaylor.

Rumor: Apple’s next event to be held on October 15th?

According to France-based MacGeneration, which has offered both accurate and inaccurate information in the past, Apple’s next media event will be held on Tuesday, October 15th. Apple is expected to debut a series of new products by the end of this year, including multiple new iPad models, several new Macs, OS X Mavericks, and perhaps an update to Apple TV hardware.

Today’s report also claims that iMac stock is constrained, something we reported earlier this month. An October event following a September event would not be unprecedented. Last year, Apple debuted the iPhone 5 and new iPods in September, and then it launched new Macs, a new full-sized iPad, and the first-generation iPad mini in late October.

We’re expecting OS X Mavericks to hit the App Store toward the end of October. Besides the iMac, the MacBook Pro and Mac mini are both due for Intel Haswell-infused refreshes. We’re also expecting Apple to introduce at least two new iPads, including a redesigned full-sized model and an iPad mini with a Retina display.
